Edinburgh ideal for a winter trip
Posted in: Travel

I've never been myself, so some might say that I'm hardly qualified to tell people that staying in an Edinburgh hostel over the New Year period is sure to be an unforgettable experience but just look at the facts. Thousands of revellers each and every year really can't be wrong, can they? The annual Hogmanay festival in the Scottish capital draws crowds from all over the globe and this year, you really should be one of them.
I know I would be going, if I hadn't already promised my girlfriend that I would spend the last few days of 2009 with her. I sound hard-done-by but really, I've been either on a beach far, far away from Denver for New Year's or on a plane, heading to a beach far, far away from Denver. I can understand her frustrations - it can't be easy being in a relationship with someone with as itchy travelling feet as I have.
Anyhoo - the city of Edinburgh has been highlighted by the Huffington Post as one of the top ten places to go during the wintry season. What's more, it has put the minds of those who are planning to attend from warmer climes at rest, saying that "the cold seems to give the already atmospheric city an extra edge, exploiting further the Gothic tone that pervades much of the city". Sounds magical.
Tickets for Hogmanay are on sale now and artists on the bill for the night include Madness and Noisettes, as well as Mylo and some special guest DJs.
Berlin also features on the run-down so if Edinburgh doesn't float your boat, consider hopping on a plane to Germany. The Huffington Post recommends you check out the Christmas markets and currywurst.
