Of course, the explosion of social media sites such as Facebook and MySpace has given us a way to share our experiences in a particularly convenient way, as you can plaster snaps of your smiling mug posing under Big Ben while on a visit to a London hostel all over the web.
Twitter, too, enables flashpacking enthusiasts to give constant updates on their travels. But it's not just the young and the restless that are taking advantage of this, as a growing number of older holidaymakers are posting pics online.
Lauren Mackay, who is the brand manager at Gap Year for Grown Ups, explained that 55 to 65-year-old women are the fastest growing segment on Facebook - according to socialnomics.com - and she reckons they're keen to keep everyone updated.
"It's now easier than ever for people to share holidaying experiences with their friends and family through social networking sites," she said. With Saga Holidays recently finding that 60 per cent of over-50s going on holiday are going to be taking camera phones with them, the internet could soon be dominated by grinning backpackers of all ages!
