Being held between February 19th and March 7th, the celebrations - according to Gay Today - rival any others of their kind found throughout the rest of the world and are "hugely popular" among those who go.
I can't imagine anything better - irrespective of sexual persuasion - than a few weeks' worth of cultural happenings, endless parties and colourful parades, all taking place under the beaming Australian sun. At the very least, it would make a nice change from the daily grind, trudging into work and staring enviously out of the window at all those who don't have to do a nine-to-five.
That said, while Mardi Gras is a great reason to head to Sydney, the fact remains that any month would be perfect for a holiday down under. The obvious place to go first is, of course, Sydney Opera House, which - aside from its amazing views and stunning exterior - also puts on lots of theatre, musicals and operas for your entertainment.
And once you're done soaking up a bit of culture, it's just a tiny hop onto a water taxi from Circular Quay, which will take you to a number of beaches where you can work on your tan - Watsons Bay, the Harbour Islands and Manly to name just a few.
Of course, if you choose to visit Sydney at the end of the year, you won't be disappointed either. Forbes recently published comments made by Amanda Reynolds of the UK's Urban Design Group, who said that this is the best time to see the flowers in bloom.
