How to cope with fear of flying
Speaking to the Independent, Professor Robert Bor - who co-wrote Overcome Your Fear of Flying - has provided a checklist of things to do to make air travel just that bit easier. Don't avoid it, is his first piece of advice. Apparently, phobias are very treatable and with a bit of perseverance you could be able to shake your fear off altogether. Also, consider the destination rather than the journey as, according to Professor Bor, having a purpose in mind when flying can help you overcome your fear. Learning a few relaxation techniques can work, he recommends, so get talking to people or switch on your iPod - anything to distract yourself from the fear you may be experiencing. Drinking is another key remedy - although boozing to sleep the problem away is not advised. Professor Bor says that water and juice alongside a bit of food can help control anxiety.
I say trust the good professor. He's not just a psychologist, he actually specialises in aviation clinical psychology and has published 25 books so his word is probably better than most.
