Keep your hands in your pockets
Admittedly, pickpocketing is an amazing skill - how people can steal something from you while it's actually about your person is something I'll never fully comprehend and it must take a lot of nerve to actually go through with it. It's so impressive that many authors have dedicated tomes to the art. I mean, Charles Dickens wrote a whole book about filching wallets and silk handkerchiefs and Daniel Defoe's Moll Flanders was also quite the dab-hand. That said, it's a backpacker's worst nightmare as the most important items necessary for travelling around strange and exciting destinations are generally kept in pockets and handbags - namely money, passports and cameras.

Luckily, TripAdvisor has compiled a handy (no pun intended) list of some of the major cities in which pickpockets make the best living, to best prepare backpackers who may be planning cheap travel holidays to the areas.

Rome, for example, aside from being famed for its beautiful architecture, also has issues with thievery, particularly because half of its most well-loved tourist attractions - according to TripAdvisor's Popularity Index - are outdoor attractions which make it easier for robbers to catch people unawares.

Madrid's El Rastro flea market is another place where unsavoury characters can set about ruining a backpacker's vacation, as is the busy metro and many of its museums, where distracted people can prove to be an easy target.

Pickpockets in Buenos Aires are apparently a creative bunch and backpackers can often find themselves suddenly covered in bird pooh (most likely to be mustard), with a helpful local offering out napkins with which to clean themselves up.
