Off the beaten track or capital cities?

When you decide it's time for a holiday and you want to jet-off to foreign lands, how do you decide on your destination? Do you first pick a country and then book your hostel in that country's capital city? Or do you decide that you want to escape the hoards of city break tourists and seek out a remote town by a lake or some mountains that you've never even heard of before?

Taking your holiday in a big and bustling city means that there will be loads to do there for your holiday, as well as so much choice when it comes to accommodation, restaurants, and well... everything! But the downside to this can be that you won't be the only one opting for this holiday so you can expect lots of tourists. And also when you visit a big city it's going to be busy with all its inhabitants going about their everyday life. So are these points reason enough to make you opt for the road less travelled?

Choosing a lesser known area or remote town in countries around Europe in particular can provide an amazing backdrop for a different holiday experience. Countries like Italy, France, Switzerland and Spain are awash with quaint towns and interesting villages that tourists rarely frequent. These areas are loaded with history, stunning architecture and friendly locals. So, which road will you travel this year when taking your holiday? And let us know if you have any suggestions of great places to visit off the beaten track anywhere in the world by leaving a comment below!
