Often described as "the custodian of authentic Arabia", Oman is a great place for anyone to visit and there's no shortage of activities to keep backpackers amused for days on end. Most important, however, are the country's notoriously unspoilt beaches, which stretch for miles on end and - unlike nearby Dubai - are much less populated by crowds of clamouring tourists, ideal for the backpacker who likes a bit of peace and quiet while soaking up some beautiful Arabian sunshine.
However, if sleeping on the sand can only keep you occupied for so long, there's no need to panic as Oman is a lot more than just a dustbowl. Four-wheel drive tours among the mountains and through the deserts can be found for all those who seek them out and great times can be had meeting locals, seeing camels and watching the sun set between the dunes. For those looking to sample some of the country's culinary delights, visits to one of the many souks in the area are a must, where freshly-caught fish and handmade sweet meats can be easily found.
Failing that, India is also a nice - although slightly more obvious - place for backpackers to go and if you do decide to head over there, make sure you hook yourself up with an elephant ride, a rite of passage for any holidaymaker worth their jetsetting salt.
