Rome home to archaeological delights
"Nothing shocks me. I'm a scientist." That's just one line uttered by what I feel may be the best movie character of all time - the great Indiana Jones himself - but I think even he might have expressed a little surprise at this latest archaeological discovery. Those in hostels in Rome right now might be interested to hear that more Roman artefacts have been found underneath a Renaissance palazzo.

The Associated Press has brought it to my attention that, during the renovation of the palazzo back in 2004, ruins from the second to the fourth centuries were accidentally revealed and now the team has brought more pieces back from the past, including thermal baths, priceless mosaics and elegant porticos.

A frigidarium was uncovered, which is apparently a cold pool that the Romans used as part of their bathing system, as was a room that was decked out in all kinds of fantastic marble and mosaics, made with approximately half a million tiles.

Despite all the digging that has gone on since the ruins' discovery, physicist Paco Lanciano was quoted by the news source as saying that it was everyone's intention to respect the authenticity of the site.

"[It] is almost exactly as we found it," he said.

Mr Lanciano is also one of the co-founders of a multimedia museum that has been set up nearby to show guests to the area what it all would have been like all that time ago. If you want to go and check it out, do so quickly as it will only be open until January 6th, when more exploration is set to go ahead.

If you're into history, the National Museum is a must-stop on your itinerary while in Rome. It is divided into four different rooms and the Palazzo Massimo, for example, houses an extensive coin collection, with some very rare pieces.
