So imagine my excitement when I learned that a new Gourmet Tour is being launched in Japan next year. Over the course of ten days, visitors will be able to see a sake brewery, experience an authentic cooking class and take a trip to the world's largest fish market.
Japan Journeys is offering the tour from May 2010 so if you're staying in hostels in the country around that time it could definitely be worth checking out. And if you don't, be sure to experience the cuisine for yourself anyway - and stay away from burger chains!
Meanwhile, those who are heading to Korea could find that it becomes a much more tourist-friendly destination. That's because the government has announced plans to improve public transport for visitors, as well as relax some of the restrictions on visas.
And there's particularly good news for those of us who enjoy backpacker travel, as more hostels and camping sites are to be created across the country in order to facilitate tourists on a budget.
