Australia would be a lovely place to visit anyway but the added incentive of a beer festival is just the icing on the really delicious cake, really. Held at the end of October - appropriately enough for Oktoberfest - Canberra's programme of activities includes dirndl and lederhosen competitions, so backpackers will have to pack their bags wisely indeed if they want to be in with a chance of winning.
Failing that, Okinawa in Japan is showing people how it's done from October 10th to 11th, with Rocktoberfest - a two-day rock, punk and metal extravaganza for the hardcore among you. Or, if you're in the British Isles, you could enjoy a Bierfest crawl, moving between Aberdeen, London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dublin and Manchester throughout October and November.
Last but certainly not least, backpackers with a sweet tooth might find fun in Hanover - where Oktoberfest is running until October 11th - as seven bakeries and various candy shops are set up for the duration. Lantern parades and firework displays all add to the charm of this event.
If you're lucky enough to be heading to the original Munich Oktoberfest, make sure you visit new attraction The Tower, which is a giant playground with several interesting sights to see, including an erupting volcano (although you'll need 3D glasses to appreciate the effects).
