I've been reading up on the capital - on website WhatsonWhen - and there are far too many activities to choose from, so I thought I'd help you out in your decisions by offering you a taste of what I would do were I camping out in a Budapest hostel.
First up, for sure, I'd head to the city park - Varosliget, purely because it has lots of interesting historical sites within its walls so backpackers can kill many birds with one stone, so to speak. Make sure you visit Vajdahunyad Castle, which is a strange melange of different architectural styles - and send me a postcard, telling me all about it.
Then I'd probably take my life in my hands and hitch a ride on the Children's Railway, which goes through the Buda hills and is run by kids aged between 10 and 14, although an adult does - rather reassuringly - drive the train. It runs every day apart from on Mondays between September and April and heritage services are put on at the weekend.
I wish there was time for more, but sadly I must go. Enjoy Budapest and let me know how your trip went.
