In order to take part, make sure you've left your hostel in good time to get to Chandler Park by 14:00 local time, as that's when event sign-up takes place. Each year, competitive people from Wisconsin and beyond turn up in their droves to participate in speed eating and seed spitting contests, both of which look a lot of fun and really quite messy. Seed spitting in particular looks like a valuable use of time and can promote good teamwork between you and your backpacking companion as there are mixed doubles and four-person events.
Aside from that, skill with a watermelon is also part of the procedure for the day and many people have spent an age tending their melons with love and care in the hope that they'll win the Largest Watermelon Judging. Artists also have a place in this festival, with the Watermelon Carving competition.
If playing with watermelons isn't really your thing and you'd rather watch than be a contender, a craft fair is also available on the day, with arts and crafts, photography and flea markets scattered throughout the venue.
Backpackers looking for sources of entertainment off the beaten track might like to consider heading to the beach in Texas where they are holding the annual sand sculpting festival.
