Despite not being the capital, the city is undoubtedly Australia's most famous destination and its opera house and harbour are iconic images of the country. Any trip down under surely requires a visit, but don't just take my word for it - Forbes has compiled a list of what it considers to be the most beautiful cities in the world.
The contenders are strong, with the likes of Paris, Vancouver, Florence, New York, Venice and Cambridge all making the list. But it was Sydney that stood out for me, with its natural beauty - exemplified by views of the harbour from the hills of the inner city - winning praise from the news source.
A cold, wet day is of course a rarity there, but Amanda Reynolds of the UK's Urban Design Group suggested that the best time to take a trip could be when the flowers are blooming.
"Sydney is at its most beautiful in October/November when the millions of Jacaranda trees now lining huge numbers of the city streets burst into purple flower and transform even the most banal of outer suburban distributor roads," she was quoted as saying. So there's yet another reason to head to Sydney, just in case my recent suggestion that you should go in order to try Doctor Pong - a new bar that combines drinking and table tennis - wasn't enough for you!
