The best places in the world to take a road trip
There's nothing like having your own transport to get around and when travelling the world it's no different. You can go from place to place at your own pace and see more of a country. Before you think about a road trip though, make sure you do your homework. Know the rules of the road in each country, have your international drivers licence, relevant insurance, money for fuel and of course, a map! Most of all, be safe, take it easy and enjoy the scenery on these amazing road trips.
Netherlands - Flower (Bollenstreek) Route
The Netherlands is famous for tulips but on this route you get to see even more flowers like hyacinths and daffodils. Head for this route in spring to see them and their colours at their best.
New Zealand - North island
Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit fans will be up for this trip as it covers the ground where the epics were filmed. It's 460 miles from Auckland down to Wellington but you'll take in everything from wild forests to hot volcanoes.
South Africa - The Garden Route
With the prospect of diving with sharks, gambling, wine-tasting or chilling on the beach, the garden route has everything. Be sure to make time to see the herds of ostriches roaming around in Oudtshoorn.
Thailand - Phuket northeast loop
Phuket is for sunning yourself and full moon parties, right? Well, yes, but you can also take the time to see more of the island with this road trip. You'll see more locals, more culture and memorable bay views.
Bolivia - Salar de Uyuni
This is a salt flat so it may seem odd that you can drive over it, but this is normal and there are towns all around the expanse of land. You will find flamingos roaming in areas which is an awesome sight to see. There may also be a smell of eggs in some places due to the levels of sulphur in lagoons, but don't let that put you off driving here. This is a really unforgettable trip.
Canada - Cabot Trail
Set around Cape Breton in Nova Scotia, you're in for a treat with the beautiful scenery here. Bring your hiking boots and stretch your legs along the way with a walk around the national park.
Australia - Great Ocean Road
Some people get through this in a day and others can take up to a week. It depends what you want out of it. But do take the time to experience the limestone rock formations, the towns are along the way - especially Bell's Beach in Torquay if you fancy a quick swim or paddle. But most importantly, enjoy the view.
Basque circuit - Spain
Starting in Bilbao, you will pass through Pamplona, the Pyrenees and even a small bit of the south of France with lots of scary sharp bends in between. While it's an experience to see the bulls run in Pamplona - make sure your car is kept somewhere safe during this time!
India - National Highway 8
Taking you from Delhi to Jaipur, you'll see lots of interesting trucks and buses, and people selling food on the side of the road along the way. It's a four hour trip but you can make this last longer by stopping at some of the small villages along the way to taste some local cuisine.
