According to travel writer Judy McEuen, in an article for Troy Media, this dish is squid that is served up in its own ink sauce but, if that makes you squirm and say 'gross', live a little! You're on holiday - the perfect time to expand those horizons.
As Judy says: "You will love it. You'll probably order it at least once every time you go back to Venice (and you will at least want to)."
What's the point in going to a new place if you're not going to give living like a local a try? That's half the fun and will at least provide you with a great story or two to regale to your friends and family when you head back home. Imagine spinning a yarn that begins, "I tried Seppiolone Nero for the first time. I threw up on the tablecloth but it was totally worth it. Let me tell you why."
Food aside, Venice has lots of other things to offer the intrepid traveller. Spending time in the city in May, for example, could be lots of fun as the Vogolonga is held around that time, involving people from all around the world who converge on the township to traverse its waterways in all manner of boats.
