Why do you stay in hostels?

Our facebook page is home to many avid backpackers and self taught travel experts. So we decided who better to ask for their reasons for choosing hostels when travelling. Here’s just a selection of what they had to say.
- The cheap factor
When it comes to hostels we all know they are the best means of accommodation at a low price, to which many of our facebook fans agreed...
Nicole Francisco: Because they're cheaper than hotels.
Jan Penninkhof: Then I can stay longer on holiday.
Cecilia Garcia: It's cheaper than a hotel when travelling alone and I usually enjoy the atmosphere.
- Meeting fellow travellers
Hostels are a hub of social activity with a whole host of ways to meet people. Everything about a hostel is shared – from dorms to kitchens. So why not start a chat with fellow guests, particularly if you are travelling alone...
Esther Travels: Excellent way to be able to save money for something to 'show for it' AND great way to meet people from around the world!
Narda A. Renteria: It's cheaper, you meet people from all over the world, make new friends and share each other’s experiences, and sometimes become travelling buddies.
Joann May: To meet fellow travellers, experience local culture, and it's cheaper!
Roberto Lingard: Because I meet way more interesting people at hostels than at hotels.
- You’re there to see the destination, not a room
Why spend all your money on something you will barely see? If you’re planning on exploring your surroundings, then chances are you will not be spending much time in your room...
Lee Yune Yee: All I need is a bed and clean bathrooms. After all, exploration is the name of the game.
Danerick Lemus: We look only for a place to take a shower and sleep, not a place to rest and relax. Also, it’s cheaper!
Car Pabilico: It's money-wise and cost efficient. Other than sleeping and refreshing ourselves, it's also a safe haven where we keep our things as we explore out there somewhere. Hostels are always on the top of my list.
Josh Foskett: It's affordable. I have no need to rent a massive hotel room for the night. I'm there to see things, not sit in a room all day.
Geneva Joy Hughes: Because the last thing I travel to see is the damn hotel lobby! So why pay for it!
Steve Kelley: It's part of the journey, not a break from it.
Jarod Hightower-Mills: Housing the jumping off point for exploration. I want to spend my money on the experience not a bed.
