Luckily, a new report has put my mind a bit more at ease - now I can jetset and save money on Christmas shopping and so can you if you're staying in a Berlin hostel, or even a hostel in Prague. And not to mention those hostels in Budapest! That's right - if you're in Eastern Europe, you're sure to be in for a good, less-costly time.
The study by Post Office travel services - brought to my attention by the Press Association - has revealed that shopping in Berlin is cheaper than it is in Paris, with Christmas gifts such as perfume, jeans and cameras proving to be four per cent more affordable.
And if you're really intent on grabbing some bargains, make a pit stop over in Prague, which offers the best value for money of all the former Eastern Bloc countries, with the items coming in at nine per cent cheaper than Paris.
Before you make any decisions about which plane to hop on, however, spare a thought for the words of advice from head of travel services with the Post Office Sarah Munro, who cautioned: "Budget-conscious UK tourists … should do their homework before booking to ensure that they pick a city break where the pound in their pocket will stretch further."
If you do choose Berlin, try and make time to visit Museum Island, which houses five different exhibition halls, surrounded by the river Spree.
