Doing Hawaii on the Cheap Most of the activities on offer in the Hawaii Islands centre on whale watching or water sports such as kayaking, parasailing, snorkelling and scuba diving along the fabulous coral reefs, all of which can be very dear to do. However you can still enjoy the best of the islands on a shoestring. Once there you will find numerous budget accommodation options available as well as many free activities.

 

 

Hawaii - The Big Island

 

Doing Hawaii on the CheapThis is the biggest Hawaii Island so it is best to divide your time between the Hilo side of the island and the Kona side. For sightseeing visit the Volcanoes National Park. You can stroll around taking in the landscape of rainforests and volcanoes or learn everything there is to know about lava. Here lies Kilauea, the world's most active Volcano.

What is there to do for free?

(1) Visit the Akaka Falls State Park to see fabulous waterfalls.

(2) Check out Ka Lae - where the Polynesians first landed and settled in Hawaii.

(3) Take a peek at the stars at the astronomy visitor centre Mauna Kea – at 2,700m above sea level it is said to be above the clouds.

(4) Relax on the beautiful beaches at Punalu and Kehena – both are made up of soft black volcanic sand.

Maui – The Valley Isle

 

Doing Hawaii on the CheapMaui is alive with action and adventure. Its name is synonymous with romantic getaways and nonstop fun. It is also home to its very own annual film festival as well as many other cultural events.

What is there to do for free?

(1) Wander around the art galleries for free in Lahania - remember it is only free if you don't buy anything!

(2) Hike to Iao Valley to see the magnificent Iao Needle.

(3) Rent snorkelling gear for next to nothing and go solo - just be careful not to damage the landscape.

(4) You don't need a guided tour on a boat to go whale watching. Find yourself a good spot on the cliffs overlooking Honolua Bay and you should be lucky enough to see some humpbacks.

 

 

Kauai – The Garden Isle

 

Doing Hawaii on the CheapIf you want to get away from it all and relax in peace, Kaui is the Hawaii Island for you. It is the least urban island of the bunch and this can be seen in the untouched landscape. You won’t find any highways, super modern resorts or high rise buildings here but this is the whole charm of the island.

What is there to do for free?

(1) Visit the north shore of the Island called NaPali Coast and take a walk to witness the beautiful cliffs, spectacular flowers, deep valleys and crystal waterfalls – the best nature has to offer!

(2) Watch the sunset on the beautiful Poipu Beach.

(3) For those of you who love coffee swing by the Kauai Coffee Company for free tours and sampling.

(4) Take a hike through Waimea Canyon – the so called “Grand Canyon of Hawaii”. There is a river, plenty of gorges and deep pools to see.

(5) It is also recommended to take full advantage of the uncrowded beaches where all the usual water activities are available.

 

 

Oahu – The Gathering Place

Doing Hawaii on the CheapNot only is Oahu the third biggest of the Hawaiian Islands it is in fact the most populated – around 70% of Islands people live here. It is probably best known as the home of Honolulu and Pearl Harbour.

What is there to do for free?

(1) Visit the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbour, the biggest visitor tourist attraction in the state. Free tours are offered between 8am and 3pm every day.

(2) In Honolulu you can climb the Aloha Tower free of charge. It gives you view of the city and is good for orientation.

(3) Pay a visit to the Hawaiian Ethnic Art Museum at Sunset Beach.

(4) Spend you day wandering along the famous Waikiki beach. Sometimes they have free outdoor movies showing.

(5) Go surfing. Rent or borrow a board and try your hand at this most popular of Hawaiian pastimes.
