On a recent trip to London I was delighted to discover that there is so much to do in the English capital city that doesn’t cost a penny. London has a bit of a reputation for being quiet expensive for a holiday and while this can be true, here at Hostels.com we’ve figured out how you can get the most from your London visit while on a budget. Many of the best London attractions are free so add some of these fun things to do in London to your list to make the most of your trip. There are also lots of cheap hostels in London which is always a good start to any trip! And to continue saving money on your London visit then read on to find out more about free things to do in London.
Museums and Art Galleries
One of the best things about London is that most of the museums and art galleries all over the city boast free entry all of the time. There are world class museums and art galleries in London such as the Tate Modern, Natural History Museum, Science Museum and lots more. You can spend hours in each of these museums as they have great collections and exhibitions on show. These London museums and art galleries are easily accessible from your cheap London hostel too as they are close to tube and bus stops.
Parks and Squares
Another great free thing to do in London is to take a walk around the many parks and squares that are located all over the city. Parks such as Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens and Regent’s Park are the perfect place to spend a few hours on a nice day in London and is the perfect way of getting in some London sightseeing. These parks are beautifully kept with many monuments, fountains and cafe’s dotted all around them. Some of biggest and best London attractions are its squares around the city. Trafalgar and Leicester Square are probably the two that best known. Leicester Square is a must see at night time also as it is lit up by the lights of surrounding theatres and cinemas.
If you like to shop then make sure you check out the many markets in London. However, even if you don’t want to spend a penny, these markets are still a definite must see for their atmosphere alone and are a great free thing to do in London. Camden is a top spot for markets as there are so many in the one area. With Camden Lock market, The Stables market and Inverness Street market to name a few, Camden offers a top market atmosphere. The colours from the stalls and shops and smells and shouts from food stalls makes walking around London markets a great way to spend a few hours. Other areas for London markets include Old Street, Brick Lane and Portobello. And there are also some great cheap London hostels available in these areas.
Changing of the Guard
The Royal Family and their palaces in England are a huge attraction for both locals and tourists to the country. Buckingham Palace in London is a top London attraction for many tourists and the crowds are at their largest when the Changing of the Guard takes place here as it is one of many popular things to do London. This takes place daily during summer months and every other day during winter from 11.30am. A top tip for the Changing of the Guard is to get to Buckingham Palace early if you want a good spot to see all the action. The ceremony lasts for around 45 minutes and once that finishes up you can take a stroll around St. James Park or walk up to Westminster. South Bank Walk
Some of London’s top attractions can be found all along the River Thames along the South Bank. When you finish up taking your pictures of Big Ben and Westminster Abbey, walk towards the London Eye which will then lead you on a beautiful stroll all along South Bank. Sights lining this walkway include the Tate Modern, Millennium Bridge and will lead you down to London Bridge and Tower Bridge with some excellent views of London’s top buildings along the way. And better still is that some of the best things to do for free in London can all be found around South Bank. There are also cafes and pubs along the way where you can stop for some food and drinks. And after all that London sightseeing and walking you will be in need of a comfy bed so check out some of our London hostels here.
If you are looking to be entertained on your trip to London but don’t want to pay big bucks for a West End show then take advantage of all the great street entertainers. Covent Garden and South Bank are some top spots for London’s street performers who draw large crowds daily with their acts and tricks. Obviously these street entertainers need to make a few pounds too so if you like what you see then maybe you could spare a pound or two from your budget!
