Eco Hostels

We’re all becoming more aware of the effects our actions have on climate change and the strain we’re putting on dwindling supplies of natural resources. People are measuring their carbon footprints, disposing waste properly and in general being a little kinder to Mother Nature.

The good thing about all this green thinking is that it saves us money as well as saving the Earth and now we can save even further on both by staying in Eco-Friendly hostels around the world…

Hedonisia Hawaii Eco-Hostel

Hedonisia Hawaii Eco-Hostel

Located in the Hawaiian rainforest on almost 4 acres of land with views of the ocean and a volcanic crater it’s fair to say that this is not ordinary hostel! The land also includes some gardens with spices and salad greens for guests to get creative with.

These guys take being green very seriously from their energy consumption (electricity is provided by a nearby geothermal plant), to their water consumption (all taken from the surrounding rainforest) and even their toilet practices (you’ll find out what the ‘P-zones’ are when you get there!). The accommodation is all either tents, huts or a mixture of both!

When the first see Gyreum you would be excused for thinking you’re looking at a hobbits house from middle earth, or maybe some sort of Bond villains hideout. In fact this strange structure is one of the worlds most ecologically sound hostels set into the countryside of Sligo in Ireland and thanks to its unique design it actually fits in very well to its surroundings.

Solar panels heat the water, 2 wind turbines power the geothermal under-floor heating, rainwater is collected for later use in showers and toilets and there’s an organic vegetable garden outside to make sure you eat well too! There are even tents inside the main hall, where most of the action happens, so you can fall asleep in front of the big open fire after a long day of walking the hills and visiting local attractions.

Renstierna Hotel & Hostel

Renstierna Hotel & Hostel

This cosy hostel is located in Södermalm, a district of Stockholm situated on a large island but still very close to the city centre. Renstierna is family run and very much aiming to be your home from home, this is helped by the fact there are only ten rooms which creates a really nice atmosphere.

Being green is taken very seriously here and you’ll find all the usual eco-minded practices in place. What’s more, each morning you’ll be treated to a delicious organic breakfast buffet!
