It can be tough trying to choose between a beach holiday or a city break. But what if you didn’t have to settle for one or the other? What if you could make a city escape with a coastline? Well, if you visit one of these great beach cities you get the best of both worlds – relaxing by the beach with the city skyline behind you!
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
With over 40 kilometres of shoreline, Rio de Janeiro is a city surrounded by beaches making it one of the ultimate beach cities! Two of the most famous beaches in Rio de Janeiro are Copacabana and Ipanema. Rio thrives on its city beaches and they are probably the city’s most popular attractions. The city is packed full of great attractions, food and entertainment too.
It may be a man made beach surrounding one of America’s great lakes, but this Chicago beach is beautiful. Chicago is a popular city with lots to see and do, but the addition of a beach to this city makes it even more appealing. Along the sandy shore you will find a bike track, lots of runners and some restaurants where you can take in some spectacular views of the lake and Chicago’s skyline. It may come as a surprise to many but don’t forget Chicago as a beach city!
Summertime in Barcelona sees the beaches packed full of people up and down the shoreline of this cosmopolitan Spanish city. This beach city not only has sandy shores to offer as you will find Barcelona full of culture, history, excellent dining and nightlife. With the added bonus of being a Mediterranean coastline you can expect some amazing beach weather to accompany your visit to this beach city during summertime.
Lisbon is the only European capital city located in such close proximity to sandy beaches. While they may not be as warm or popular as the beaches found in the south of the country, they are definitely an added addition to this city. The coastline around the city of Lisbon ranges from sandy dunes to hidden coves, as well as being up to excellent standards. Lisbon is full of culture and is a mix of old and new architecture. So when you are trying to decide on some European beach cities to visit this year, don’t forget about Lisbon.
When many people think of beaches and Sydney only one word comes to mind – Bondi. The popular Bondi Beach is one of the top attractions in Sydney and probably one of the world’s best known coastal areas. Bondi Beach is made up of roughly a kilometre of golden sand that lies just twenty minutes from Sydney’s downtown area. It’s also a surfer’s paradise. It’s not the only beach to be found in Sydney so make sure you explore the other less popular and therefore less crowded Sydney beaches too.
Cape Town, South Africa
Not enough to have the sea, sand and city all in one, you can also add in the bonus of Table Mountain to the backdrop of your beach city vacation to Cape Town. This South African city has a beach for all tastes whether you are looking for a fun family beach or a glamorous sandy shore where you can sit back and sip come cocktails. The city and surrounds of Cape Town has lots on offer too from some great nature reserves to buzzing nightlife. Cape Town is probably one of South Africa’s most popular beach cities for visitors from all over the world.
Miami is known as a diverse city with some great neighbourhoods and attractions. It’s also a great place to go if you want your vacation in one of many US beach cities. The beautiful beaches of Miami suit all tastes from tourists to locals to surfers. The city itself also has a lot on offer from great nightlife and shopping.
Seeing as it is an island, it’s no surprise to learn that you will find miles of coastline in Hawaii. However, Waikiki Beach is Honolulu’s most popular. Along the sandy shores of Waikiki you will find many resorts and hotels with both tourists and locals enjoying this city beach or tackling the rolling waves.
France is where you will find some of the most beautiful and remote beaches in the world. However, it’s also home to some idyllic city beaches. Canada’s not somewhere that would come to mind for many when it comes to trying to pick a destination for beach cities. However, don’t overlook Vancouver when looking for a beach city. The bustling city of Vancouver is home to ten beaches that offer views of the city, mountains and coast – what more could you ask for! Vancouver is also a great city for culture, restaurants and entertainment.
