El Misti Hostel Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Dorms at the back are dark. Rooms at front better. Location ok in terms of proximity to beach but hostel surrounded by high buildings and hill making it a bit gloomy. Kitchen could be better. The El Misti chain party hostels had such a good reputation I was surprised how terrible the Copa hostel is. The bathrooms are tiny and filthy... you can literally use the toilet while in the shower!!! While I was here a set of bunks in my room collapsed narrowly avoiding really badly injuring the girl on the bottom bunk... the staffs attitude on this was appalling.. ie they thought it hilarious. The staff likes messenger a lot! Remember hammer and nails for your bed because it might be in a bad condition. Loud music is played all night long. The location is good but it takes more than two minutes to the beach unless you can fly. You have to rent your lockers. 15 Reals in deposit and 1 Real per day. Kasper, from Denmark ~ 18th Feb 2009

the hostel is too hot to sleep at nights. there should be ac in the rooms or several fans..and also free transfers should be both ways not one way

Dear Kemon, It is not the hostel that is very hot, it is Rio de Janeiro. There are two seasons here: hot, and hell. 7 of our 10 rooms have air conditioned... you just picked the cheapest dorm, shared with other 16 people... of course its hot. for just 4 brazilian reais you could get a dorm with less people and AC. But where you stayed there are 3 fans, two big windows and a door to a balcony, it is not that bad. We prefer just to offer free transfer service to come to our hostel, not to leave it.
