overall, i'm happy to have stayed here. the hostel is definitely not one of the best that i've ever stayed at, but it's secure enough and it's very cheap, and it's right in the middle of old san juan, and that's all that matters. it definitely helps to know some basic spanish if you stay there, but the guy is nice. there are no beaches nearby, but if you stay in the beach areas (ex. isla verde), then you'll have to take a cab to old san juan every time, so may as well do it the other way Victoria, from USA ~ 17th May 2012

The Fortaleza Guest House is a wonderful place to experience Old San Juan however, the facilities, atmosphere, and cleanliness is horrible. The staff does not speak any English. The rooms also do not have air conditioning, which makes the room extremely hot/humid in the summer. Overall, the location is the only plus in this hostel. I would only recommend if you want to live in Old San Juan. Roy, from USA ~ 22nd Apr 2012

It probably would have been good to have an English speaker on the staff. Otherwise, it was great. Sarah, from Puerto Rico ~ 9th Mar 2012

If you want to experience staying right in Old San Juan for an affordable price, this is the place.Full of character, friendly staff, and easy to find.We had a room with a double bed and balcony. It was noisy at night but then again, we are in a city.Bring your ear plugs. There was much confusion with guests wanting to walk in and pay for a room. They were told to book in online. There was no computer available to do that. Sue and John, from USA ~ 10th Mar 2012

Stayed one night in the mixed 4-bed dorm room. Most of the rooms, however, are affordable, hostel-quality but private (1-2 bed) rooms, which gives the place a different feel than the typical hostel. It has a shared kitchen and bathrooms, but not really any good common space in which to meet other travelers. Definitely a different mentality than other hostels. (Some) staff speak so-so English. Great location in Old San Juan though. Quite comfortable and perfectly decent, but not outstanding. Jennifer, from USA ~ 7th Mar 2012

No lo recomiendo. Está muy sucio, las habitaciones son muy pequeñas, algunos colchones eran tan finos que se te clavaba la madera de la cama...en fin si podeis evitad este sitio. Cristina, from Spain ~ 25th Feb 2012

Can't beat the location , price or isreal who operates the place. Laid back and clean. Can have guest over etc. Get a key to the front door. I highly recommend paying extra for a room with AC. PR is hot and humid. I did and was happy I did. Gary, from USA ~ 5th Oct 2011

Great location, and you can't beat the price. It is very basic, but nothering bad to say for the price. There is a balcony overlook the street that I did not use but could great for people watching. There is kitchen with full size refrigerator. Management had no idea that I was coming and really did not know what to charge me. I had a printout but the "clerk" didn't even look at it.I just gave him the $25 that was due. Robert, from USA ~ 3rd Oct 2011

Even though it is difficult to keep shared spaces clean, the kitchen could be kept in better condition. The bathrooms, however, were clean. The mattress was old and worn out in my bed no one should have to sleep on that.I did not bring this up to the management who was friendly and may have changed it had I asked.
