I went to this hostel for Ottawa race weekend. We got excellent service (got to come back after check out for showers, they had a special early breakfast for runners). you cannot beat the location, right in downtown and by byward market. The rooms are small (SMALL) and cramped. Since it used to be a jail, there are no windows in the room, so not much natural light or air. There is a club downstairs, and the techno dance music is SUPER LOUD, and plays all night. The beds also squeak A LOT. Suzanne, from Canada ~ 27th May 2012

I saw pictures of rooms that looked fabulous and then I got an $88 hostel room for two people and it was this tiny jail cell with two sets of bunk beds, absolutely no room.I thought I was supposed to get a double room with a double bed for my boyfriend and I. This was the most expensive hostel I've ever, ever stayed in, in the whole world. There were disgusting little bugs absolutely everywhere in the womens bathroom, all on the walls and the shower floor was incredibly slippery and slimy. Natasha, from Canada ~ 21st Mar 2012

Nice hostel with friendly staff and a special atmosphere. Unfortunately, when I was there, it was really empty so that I didn't really meet other travellers, was alone in my room and alone for breakfast. The breakfast is good too! Esther, from Germany ~ 3rd Mar 2012

I stayed here for a night, and I was greeted by the most beautiful girl at reception who was friendly and helpful, the breakfast cooked was delicious and staying in a Prison was a most interesting experience. My only complaint would be the hissing pipe (although it was pretty quiet) outside my room, and perhaps a lounge upstairs would be nice too, but other than that it was the most perfect experience. Absolutely fine accommodation but if you value peace and quiet it's probably not for you. Lots of teenage kids running around at night but reception does supply free ear plugs! So close to all the main sites though and very comfy bed. Louise, from Scotland ~ 2nd Nov 2011

The jail is pretty cool but expensive for what it is - all advertised costs are "member rates" and you have to pay more for "membership". No breakfast or staff interaction - it isn't really the best hostel experience of my life but this place is really all about the venue. Not bad but not good. Luke, from Australia ~ 11th Oct 2011

This is really expensive especially when you are no HI-member. There is no breakfast included, no availability to buy a breakfast, you have to pay to store your luggage and I didn´t like the jail atmosphere but unfortunately there had been no other hostel in Ottawa. Loved this hostel just because it was so unique. Did not have the nerve to sleep in a jail cell. Location was great and price is good especially if you are a HI member. Kristy, from New Zealand ~ 21st Dec 2011

Ideal location, meets most needs of travellers, but DEFINITELY OVERPRICED. For the price, I would AT LEAST expect a breakfast and to be able to take the Crimes & Punishment tour for free. They should also replace those squeeky beds and fix the noisy ventilation on the 4th floor. The membership thing is totally outdated, considering that youth hostels are no longer a new concept. After a few nights of paying the supplement for non-members, I should get my membership card, like in Europe. Joanie, from Canada ~ 4th Sep 2011
