Hatters Hostel in Manchester, England

Great Value Place to stay for a few days; very close to centre/rail staion, free toast and coffee/tea anytime. I went last year when they had events (such as a pub crawl for guests) which were great for getting to know folk...however these seem to have now stopped, which is a shame. SHOWERS WERE SO DIRTY, I FELT DIRTIER GETTING OUT OF THE SHOWER. DOORS WERE SEE THROUGH IN THE SHOWERS, AN THERE WAS A WEIRD SMELL EVERY WHERE. ROOMS WERE TOO HOT, NO AIR COMING IN , COULD NOT OPEN A WINDOW. WONT BE IN A HURRY TO STAY AGAIN Yvonne, from Ireland ~ 5th Jul 2009

This hostel is very very bad. I thought Hatters in Manchester would be good because I lived in Hatters Hostel in Birmingham before and that was great, but Hatters in Manchester was really bad, and is much worse than that in Birmingham. First of all, my room was in 5th floor, but the elevator doesn't work, so I have to take my heavy luggage by myself to the 5th floor. Secondly, I lived in twin room, and the room was very narrow, very old and not clean. There is no bathroom in the twin room,

Hey Ran, Great to hear you are a fan of hostels in the Hatters Family, but I am Sorry you didn't enjoy your experience at Hatters Manchester. In response to the comments you brought up, Yes you were on the 5th Floor and Yes we do have a lift, which was in full working order when you stayed with us, it is just that it is a service lift and needs to be operated by a member of staff, all you have to do is ask us.... In terms of your twin room, it may have appeared narrow, that is because we inhabit a very unusual building, where all the rooms are different, it may seem old, but that adds to the charm, but I can assure you it was cleaned every day. As far as en-suite facilities are concerned in your room, you will have been informed at the time of booking, that none of our rooms provide that option, if this was important to you, you should have let us know and we would have recommended our sister hostel just up the road, which has those facilities. Whilst you comments about our staff, I find most unusual, as we consistently score over 85% in this area and receive glowing reports of the friendliness and professionalism of our team. All I can put your experience down to is not booking the right type of room, which adversley affected your experience with us, if ever there is a problem, just talk to us, we are here to help. The hostel was in a great location and was what we initially thought to be good value.Our beds were fine but the room was in a bad state- bits of the wall had fallen off and the floorboards were loose, causing a few of us to trip.There was no lift in a 5 floor hostel. The showers offered NO privacy- the doors were see-through!The smell was horrible as the shower drains didnt drain properly.Our room wasn't in anyway cleaned while we were there.Staff were helpful,wouldnt stay here again Gillian, from Ireland ~ 2nd Jun 2009

We tried calling the place to cancel and didn't get through. The guy at the desk (short haired, Swedish?) made us pay for 3 people even though only two of us made it. We had a rough day already and made an attempt to cancel. He showed us no flexibility and provided poor customer service. Alex, from USA ~ 20th May 2009
