Bundi one of the most picturesque town of Rajasthan, sits on a narrow gorge in this hills and is encircled by a walled fortification with four gateways Bundi was named after Bunda a Meena chieftain. Bundi is famous for its intricate paintings and murals. The town is also known as the city of "step wells" as there are a number of step wells dating back to the 17th century .James Tod wrote about Bundi is his celebrated Annals Antiquities of Rajasthan (1829) " The coup d'ocile of the castle palace of Bundi from whichever side you approach perhaps the most striking in hide "Bundi is in a sense ap town and as befits a center famous for its paintings in 17th & 18th centuries , the town still gives the feeling of having the seat of a court. In -the lap of attractive green hills of Aravali on the bank of Nawal Sagar Lake in the Bundi city, the temple of "GAJALAXMI" is the center of people's belief all over the region & state.
There are many old proverbs about this temple and the idol of the "Goddess" According to olden belief, there of Puri family by the side of the Temple. One of the ancestors of the family named "Nakhiji" is whom people and his resciples respectfully called "Guruji" Once he was sitting in devotion, he saw a Saint passing above in the sky carrying idol of "Gajalaxmi". "Guruji made him to come down on the Earth. The Saint put down the idol on the earth and told everything about his Journey. Guruji" realized thet no harm was being caused & he allowed saint to continue his journey. The saint tried his best to lift again the idol , but he could not After all he went away his way leaving idol here From that time , this was "MATHA" idol is being worshiped in this temple of "Gajlaxmi" just adjacent to this idol "Jalabhishek"(bath) it cures many diseases and if some pregnant lady faces problem in delivery the water drinking helps in easy and Natural Delivery "Gajalaxmi" is considered the Goddess of wealth and prosperity which is worshipped on every Friday and specially on Dewali festival.
