Welcome to Manila's best-kept backpacker secret, an alternative hostel on a mission to change the way travelers experience Manila. Top-rated and family-run since 2009, the Red Carabao is located smack-dab in the heart of real Manila—away from the Malate red-light district yet nearest the LRT Metro, Banaue buses, and Clark Airport. If you value authentic travel, a bit of adventure and some hardcore fun, this is the home you're looking for!

Our family opened the Red Carabao to let backpackers and friends experience true Manila as locals do. And just about everyone says we do a pretty good job at it. Still, it has never been our aim to cater to everyone's motives for travel. For your sake and ours, please read about us to find out whether you and the Red Carabao are a compatible match.

Find the Red Carabao at 2819 Felix Huertas Street, Santa Cruz, Outside the Chinese Cemetery South Gate, Manila 1003, Philippines.

HOW TO GET HERE: Taxi fare starts at PHP250 from any one of the three Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) terminals. Special, yellow Airport Taxis charge 75% over white metered taxis, which can be found by climbing up to the departure wing of any terminal or anywhere outside the airport. Direct the driver to take Roxas Boulevard north towards Manila City Hall and Quezon Bridge. Make a right on Laon-Laan, left on Dimasalang, left on Blumentritt (Chinese Hospital), right on Aurora Boulevard (corner Security Bank), and a final right turn on Felix Huertas (corner Fashionista Salon). We are the tallest building on the street.

THE ULTRA-BUDGET MODE: Approach airport staff about hourly bus shuttles (20 PHP, 20mins, daytime) to the EDSA LRT Station. At the intersection of Taft and EDSA, hop on the light rail towards Monumento-Roosevelt and alight at Abad Santos Station (15 PHP, 25min, daily 5.30am-10pm). Below the station, tricycle drivers will know exactly where to take you for 20 pesos. Rest easy, everything will be fine if you follow these straight-forward directions and welcome the adventure.

WHAT TO REMEMBER: As a traveler unfamiliar with the City of Manila, you must when asked where you are staying, say that you are being hosted at a friend's house This is an effective way of deterring absurd meter fees and long drives.

Gelegen in der Nähe

The Red Carabao is located in a real residential area that's not only convenient to reach by metro, but also way safer than the red light districts targeted by tourist crimes. Around here, expect to be greeted by everyone with nothing but waves and smiles. Taxis are abundant around the clock, and can easily take you to bus terminals for Clark Airport, Banaue, and all other destinations up north. While Metro Manila lacks a city center, Old Downtown districts are still full of life and just 5 stations from the hostel.
