Bear on the Lake Guesthouse/ HI Cape Breton Island in Cape Breton Island, Kanada

Coming from mainland Nova Scotia:

Halifax 320km/ 3.5 hrs
Prince Edward Island Ferry 190 km/ 2 hrs
Moncton 390 km / 4 hrs
Newfoundland Ferry 85 km/ 45 min

Cross onto CAPE BRETON ISLAND via the Canso Causeway, follow the Trans Canada Highway #105 towards Cheticamp/ Baddeck/ Sydney. You will drive for 54 km until you reach Bear on the Lake - it is helpful to watch the green kilometer markings along the Trans Canada to find us!
WHYCOCOMAGH is the first town you will come to, (around 49 km). It's a great spot to grab groceries, fresh locally grown produce, beverages, fudge, ice cream & fuel! Continue on Hwy #105 through Whycocomagh, to our village, ABERDEEN.

We're located between the 54 km & 55km marking on the LEFT hand side of the road. Once you see the 54 km sign, it's time to slow down! The house number is 10705. Look for our 'Bear on the Lake' sign, neon green flower box and black bear holding the red mailbox! We share the driveway with our neighbours, so be sure to take the driveway that goes up the hill to get to our house! See you soon!

Coming from Sydney / North Sydney/ Off the Cabot Trail:

Take the Trans Canada Highway # 105 towards BADDECK/ CANSO CAUSEWAY. You will drive past Baddeck, through Nyanza and Bucklaw before coming to our town.
It is helpful to watch the green kilometer markings along the Trans Canada to find us! You will find us between the 55km and 54 km markings. {Remember the kilometer markings descend when driving towards us from the Baddeck/ Sydney area!}
Our driveway will be on the RIGHT hand side of the road.

SHUTTLE:
There are several local shuttle companies that drive by the hostel daily from Sydney/North Sydney and the Halifax/ Halifax Airport area. The price of a shuttle is LESS expensive than the the bus. Plus you will arrive at the guesthouse faster and directly at our doorstep rather than having a 5 km walk from the bus stop! Contact us for shuttle information!

BUS:
The local Acadian bus arrives in Whycocomagh once daily from Halifax / Moncton and once daily from Sydney. The drop off location is at Vi's Restaurant, 5 km from the hostel. Check for up-to-date schedules at acadianbus.com.

DRIVE SHARE:
We have a 'Drive Share' board at the hostel to help link travelers together. If you find yourself without wheels need a lift, try your luck posting a note. If you have a car & feel like company, take a peak at the board and feel welcome to offering a lift to a fellow traveler. Explore Cape Breton, connect with other travelers and make life long friends!
