Travelling by Greyhound

TRAVELLING BY GREYHOUND Submit a Tale here | More Tales
For those who want to know, the Greyhound bus service is usable and in most cases convenient. Furthermore it's probably one of the cheapest ways to travel in North America if not the most economical.

I have logged an easy 20,000 miles on greyhound including both long and short trips. On occasion it has proved inconvenient and to some, unendurable, for longer voyages. It seems to me that a 500 mile trip cannot go by without the comment, "I'll never travel Greyhound again" and this is unfortunate. I have travelled the distance and had many a 3 day trip from west to east or vice versa and infrequently a trip north and south.

Camaraderie and enjoyment can be had on even the shortest trips; I once remember a group travelling from Texas to Colorado and on the trip we had a puppet show, most of the bus singing, and meals being paid for by others. Part of what I would call the 'greyhound code' requires me to feed, teach, and assist those I find in need along the way- I have been the one in need many times and had my needs provided for by other riders and now offer such service to others.

To all those travelling via Greyhound bus lines or subcontracted lines, I have this advice: when travelling overnight always carry food needing only hot water or nothing at all to render it edible (stations, restaurants and gas stations provide hot water) and to always, no matter the season, carry a sweat shirt (jersey) or something to take the chill off, as busses continually use air conditioning even if it isn't hot. Also watch your baggage, if possible, to ascertain that it hasn't gotten onto a vehicle other than the one you are travelling on.

There are few stories of baggage going missing, however, the baggage that does go missing is usually never recovered - for this reason I take only carry on luggage, you are usually afforded two pieces, which proves sufficient.
