Is it a homeless shelther, a halfway house, or a hostel? This hostel-hotel sported just two toilets for dozens of rooms on the fourth floor that I stayed on. And, it was the norm to have the yellow urine drip on the toilet seat. No urinals and a low-class clientele just don't mix well. The place consisted of middle aged mentally ill women, international students studying short summer course at UC Berkeley, and the occassional drifter. It was the dirtiest place I've ever stayed in in America- really more like a homeless shelter than a proper hostel/hotel. The adjacent health club was decent, and was were I tended to use the bathroom facilities- even though they too had just two toilets and no urinals in the men's locker room, and damn cold floors. All in all, I wouldn't recommend it, nor use it again, except for the fact that it is the easiest and cheapiest room to secure in Berkeley that I know of. Yet, it did feel overpriced for the tiny (bathroom-free room).

Excellent facility and while more costly than what we have seen in other parts of the world for shared toilet and shower, the price ($56 per double room inc tax) is certainly reasonable for the Bay Area.

You Get what you pay for. The rooms smelt, I think I got foot rot from the shower - but the pest people were spraying the place for cockroaches the day I left, so it might be okay now (not).

The YMCA hostel is an excellent alternative to shelling out the big bucks for a hotel room. The atmosphere is nothing special and the room is like a dorm room, but you get what you pay for! The location couldn't be better and the security seemed good.

Clean, secure, quiet with good amenities. Free use of the neighboring gym, close to campus/downtown, and affordable. Towels and bed linens are provided, that was nice not having to need a sleep-sheet. Showers also have shampoo/soap provided as well. Would definately recommend.

Great location next to the BART in Downtown Berkeley but surroundings can be a little noisy. Building smells in some parts. Full access to the Y is a big plus.
