this place was OK. The Check-in and bag storage area was in a different building than the room, which is inconvienent if your a backpacker and staying for more than a few days.

If you are in amsterdam to party, this is definitly a good place to stay. Lots and lots of young people. There is a bar downstairs and it always full of people smoking pot.

The staff could have been much more accommodating. I tried to switch rooms so that my friend and i could be in the same room and the staff made it seem impossible and denied this simple request (I know they could have easily helped me too because there were several empty beds in my room for several nights). The limiting kitchen hours also annoyed me. I had to eat out more than once because the kitchen was closed between 00:00 and 12:00 and I could not access my own food (although if you smoke out a staff member they might let you sneak in to grab something quick). I liked the location near Vondel Park and Leidsplein which didn't attracted as many drunk party kids as hostels closer to the heart of the city. The kitchen was reasonably clean but listening to mice crawling around the room all night nibbling on people's possessions did take some getting used to. The beds were on comfortable as well. The free fast internet was a bonus though. I would possibly stay here again (the location and cozy smoker friendly bar were nice).

On general one can say; the hostels in Netherlands are very very poor. Do not expect too much! Even the hostels in China (a third world country) - I have visited - were much better than every hostel I have been in the Netherlands. In the Flying Pig Uptown, I spent one night in a 6-bedded ensuite mixed room. The room itself was equipped with bank beds. Each bed has a locker for every bed (you need to bring your own padlock). The toilet and shower was rather small, but still enough space available. Unfortunately, my room was nearby the bar and it was therefore a little bit noisy, but still managed to sleep well. The breakfast was served in the bar which is somehow a strange place to have breakfast. There, the light was quite dark. The breakfast contained beverages (such as coffee and orange juse) and cornflakes/cereals, bread with butter and marmalade. The location was pretty good close to the southern sights of the down about 5min, just next to the famous park and close to the Hineken and Van Gogh museum (about 5min). The other sights in the north can be easily reached by tram. The next tram-stop is also about 5min away. A tip: take a multiple use ticket and only stamp one per ride; I mean: "I am a tourist and I didn't know I need to stamp more!" ;-) Another night I stayed in the Annemarie Hotel which was very very bad. I can not recommend the Annemarie Hotel which has a very unfriendly staff (the staff in the Hotel Annemarie was a f****** ass****, exploiting poor tourists), no lockers in the room, no baggage storage and was further away from town. Do not stay in Annemarie Hotel. Friends of mine stayed in the YHA hostel which seemed very good and good equipped. For Netherland standards, the Flying Pig Uptown was quite good. They are focusing on the customers' needs. Therefore I could recommend staying in Flying Pig Uptown and I would stay there again.
