Loved it! This was my first time staying in a hostel and my first time in San Francisco. Being a total newbie to the area the staff was very helpful in providing me with directions around the city to eat, sight see, and to just have fun. This hostel is right up the street from China town so it's in a really busy area. I really like the fact that there was a community kitchen so you could cook your own food. I would definately stay here again and will recommend it to others. I give two thumbs up to the Green Tortoise.

Fantastic hostel - best i've been to in USA. Organised activities, secure rooms, nice bathrooms, free breakfast, free dinners some nights. very very social - meet many ppl very easily. bit of a seedy area of broadway st, few strange ppl around at night but still felt very safe. i would definately recommend green tortoise.

If you are a up for having a great time at affordable prices this is the place. Although the location itself was a little seedy, especially late at night. It had a certain allure and was located in short walking distance from Little Italy and Chinatown. My friend and I had fun just making up our own little adventures during the day. We were lucky enough to stay in the buliding owned by Green Tortoise down the street where the private rooms were. The room itself was as nicer or nicer than any hotel I had ever stayed in and was told by a local that our view on the terrace was nicer than any he had ever seen. Pub and Burrito night on the town were well worth it and there were vegetarian options on the night I went to the dining hall. All I can say is we highly reccomend the hostel.

Not too sure about the strip joints on the street, but it's a great place with an excellent view from my room and the staff are really helpful... and how do you beat all the free stuff? would come back again (with less luggage!)

I thoroughly enjoyed staying at The Green Tortoise. I loved the location for its energy and convenience. Yes GT is near several strip clubs, but there are bouncers standing in front of the clubs and regular police patrols who keep people from loitering on the side streets. I felt quite safe. GT is a few blocks away from the heart of Chinatown and Little Italy; plus there were restaurants from 6 other nationalities within a few blocks. GT was well served by several bus lines, although a 15-20 minute walk would put you on Fisherman's Wharf or downtown. As for the stay, it was nice having free tasty dinners three times a week and free bagels every morning. The staff was polite and helpful. There were several free computers. Bathrooms were in the hallway which meant little waiting for access to toilets or showers. The under bed lockers were larger than expected. Negatives--the streets got noisy esp on Saturday night. Also GT invited local bands to play in their ballroom/common area. The bands--most with questionable talent--were loud and often played until 11:30 PM. Activities were geared for the 20-something crowd--pub crawls and drinking games like beer pong. So someone looking for peace and quiet would not like the GT. That said, I was sorry to leave; GT would be my first pick for staying at a hostel in San Franciso. I look forward to staying there again.
