They're cheap (you get breakfast vouchers in the price!), but the rooms lack AC and the doors aren't safe, I could've kicked ours in if I wanted to. They're renovating in August 2006, though, so we'll seee after that. If you want to train gym or yoga, it's perfect, they have this onn the 1st floor. Nice area, but 15 minutes (if lucky when changing) from Manhattan w subway.

I spent two weeks at the Greenpoint YMCA, and before I arrived I was expecting a cheap and cheerful stay based on the previous reviews. After all, if you're coming to visit New York, you're hardly going to be spending much time in your room! However, having just returned from my trip the only things I can recommend about the Greenpoint are its excellent location (short train ride to Manhattan, and a 10 minute walk to the hip and happening Bedford Ave) and that it's cheap rates for a private room. You get your breakfast included, which is a short walk away at the friendly Triple Decker restaurant. If you're expecting any more bangs for your buck look elsewhere. The Greenpoint doubles as a community centre, with a gym, swimming pool and sauna that locals / guests can use, but there was no such communal area for fellow travellers to socialise in. It would've been a nice addition and a way for other travellers to get to know each other, as the Greenpoint is seriously lacking in any character or fun. It actually felt more akin to staying at an old people's home, as there seemed to be an abundance of old men residing here. For the first few days this was oddly entertaining, seeing them shuffling around, scrubbing their pots and pans in the sink (and shower!), and the routine sound of hocked up phlegm in the morning. The novelty quickly wore off when you'd see the state the toilets were left in, and the quantity of dried up food left clogging up the shower drains. I'm not sure how regularly the bathroom area was cleaned, but it always seemed to be dirty / filthy. The housekeeping service the Greenpoint boasts bordered on comical. Somewhat bizarrely, my bin was emptied more than my sheets were changed. There was a five day stretch where my sheets were left completely untouched, but my bin was always left as clean as a whistle. Perhaps they run out of clean sheets by the time they reach the 4th floor? The reception staff were completely devoid of any personality let alone social skills and when I checked out I didn't get so much as a "goodbye" or a "thank-you" for my stay. I've stayed at hostels before and the Greenpoint simply either can't be bothered, or don't know how to get the basics right. If your visit is any longer than a few days I'd seriously recommend looking elsewhere.

Despite all the warnings not to take anything below $50 in NYC we had a surprisingly satisfying stay at YMCA Greenpoint. Our room (#322) was as clean as you might expect for a low budget hostel, heating was sufficient and the beds were comfortable. We even had a TV in our room. The room fare of $27 per person in a double room is amazingly low because no additional taxes were added and a really good breakfast is also included in the price as well as the free use of the swimming pool and fitness center in the YMCA building. I dont think you can get more value for $27 in NYC. Even though its not located on Manhattan the next subway is only 5 minutes away and it brings you to Manhattan downtown in 15 minutes. The only thing we did not like was that only some floors had toilets so you had to walk a long way. Nevertheless, a really great hostel if you dont want to spend a fortune on your hotel room.

This was one of the worst hostels I have stayed in. My twin bed was completely sunk in on one side and the room was extremely narrow and tucked behind some offices. It was not worth the $50/night I paid to stay there.

This is the scrappiest hostel I have seen so far. The floor is as dirty as possible, the paint is going of the walls and there seem to live some people permanentely who do not belong into a youth hostel. Sanitary facilities are horrible...

I had a great time, the bathrooms could do with some fixing though. I would definitely come back.
