Great location for bikers/rollerbladers/hikers (conveniently along a bike path and between Alcatrez and Golden Gate Bridge). Not too much around for night life, although Fisherman's Wharf (which has some clubs and bars) is within walking distance.

My boyfriend & I stayed in a shared room. Most of the other hostelers were probably in their young 20s; we are a little older but still found our roommates to be rather docile & respectful. Surely some rooms had more raucous residents, so I guess that was just like pulling straws. There was a very communal atmosphere on the shared-room side, many people coming & going late at night, sitting around talking, etc. The cafe in the mornings was great as well as the view from the back of the hostel, looking out at the bay. The location was out of the chaos of downtown -- an extremely peaceful & serene part of the city & a wonderful place to rest your head. It's a tiny bit rugged, so if you're more the pampered type, I would suggest City Hostel on Ellis & Larkin. Also, we didn't even get to check out the private dorms, but they looked spectacularly private in that they are like separate little houses. This hostel's location, set against wind-blown pine trees, the peaceful water of the bay, and also close to Green's, a fabulous vegetarian restaurant, is ideal for the more organic traveler, interested in real people & real easygoingness. The staff was helpful but not invasive or in-your-face. I would definitely suggest the Wharf hostel.

The location really help. Great common space (great for meeting people!). They offered many events like a Memorial Day BBQ (free food and beer) and pub crawls. Bathrooms could use a little work. And some of the room were a bit stuffy if the windows weren't open some. Overall we loved this place! A+
