I appreciate the work that the YMCA does. The location provides ammenities that other locations may not such as access to indoor pool, fitness center, and ball court. For the those three things alone, it should be worth it. This was my second time there, the staff wasn't as friendly and the bathrooms were nasty. My room had not been mopped in months, probably. There were stains everywhere. The bathroom also did not appear to have been clean in a day or so. It was overall, okay. But I had hoped that it would have ranked up with some of my best experiences. But it didnt. Sorry.

The room was very dirty, the sheet also. Wind entered throw windows, when I spoke with the Staff, they said that they couldn't fix windows. So I asked for a tip and tried by my self to the cover holes.

My room had no heat and it was winter. They provide a sheet and a thin blanket. I dont know if the other rooms had heat. Also, there is NO cold water on the 7th floor, only SUPER HOT water!
I spent only one night in Harlem YMCA so I do not have seen much. Overall, the service is just ok, the place is old but they make an effort to keep it as clean and secure as they can. The shower pipe broke the morning I took it before leaving and the water was boiling hot (no cool water at all). However, the staff directed me to another bathroom which was a bit old and not really clean but at least I was able to complete my shower. For those wo do not expect high standard and do not want to spend much money for a place in New York, I recommend this place.

Nice, but problems with heating and no cold water.

I moved in very early Sat. 1, Dec and was charged for Friday night. The room was not all that great, but I managed to get a good sleep. Howe3ver, Sat. night was a whole different story. Someone moved in slamming the door to their room repeatedly. I packed up at 2 am and asked for another room. The night shift desk clerk refused to move me, so I moved out. I would not recommend ANYBODY stay at this noisy dump. There are many alternatives in NYC. DON'T STAY AT THIS NOISY PLACE!!!! Lucien Lenoire
Compared to other NYC hostels, I like the Harlem YMCA because it made me feel more secure, rooms were very clean (new sheets, conforter and mattress).
staff were friendly and mostly helpful. room was fine - fairly clean and not bad size. fridge worked, tv was okay but a little fuzzy, light didn't work (but overhead light did). bathrooms were mostly clean, although a couple of mornings there was paper towel on the floor and once i saw two roaches near the sink. only complaint was heat - first two nights it was turned up so high that i had to have the window open as wide as it would go and it was still too hot to sleep. the area the hostel is in is good for getting downtown/midtown - very close to the 2/3 subway and only 2 blocks to b/c, so it was fast to get down. area seemed safe - as a single girl, walking back from subway at night didn't feel sketchy at all. in general, for the price it was a good place to stay.
TV didnt work, staff were very rude to me and the rooms were boiling hot and when i tried to get another room the staff didnt make any effort to help the situation. i wouldnt recommend this hostel
for how cheap it was compared to the rest of new york it was pretty nice.
