Very nice place, cool people and lots of freedom.

Accomodations were bare bones, but clean; Staff both helpful, knowledgeable, Environment was cozy, friendly, homey. However off-color jokes from the night manager (I think his name was Jörg) were in poor taste.

This was quite possibly the best and most awesome and friendliest hostel I have ever stayed in. The staff is personal and friendly and all of the I met guests were awesome. IT's the type of place I would want to go just to hang out with people, they were that cool. My boyfriend and I truely enjoyed our stay. We also appreciated the historische innenhof, or courtyard, and Jorg's detailed account of the history of the building. Our room was great too, the double with a shared bathroom---it was basically a guest room in a private apartment and just beautiful, clean. It truely felt like we were staying at a friend or family member's place for a few nights, not in a hostel. I would reccommend this place to absolutely all of my friends who, like me, are NOT into the crazy, loud, party all night, teenager and stag party and drunken american college students drinking ( i mean backpacking) their way across europe scene that you find a lot of hostels, especially the affordable ones, cater too. John's cozy little backpacker hostel was more mature, intimate, fun, and comfortable and perfect. I only took off a little bit for the location, simply because the neighborhood isn't the most happening place, though the street of the hostel was quite charming and sweetly residential feeling, and the public transportation options made it easy to get anywhere in berlin--I'd say it's quite a good location if you want to go party in the (awesome) clubs near Nollendorfplatz, but if partying with the punks and taking in a live show in Prenzlauer Berg or Fredrichshain, or visiting the (overpriced and slightly gentrified) sleek bars and prostitutes in Mitte is more your scene, it's a bit far away. For all day time sights though, it's a fine location, because the public transportation in Berlin in the daytime is amazing, and the hostel is just a short walk from the u-bahn and busses. Stay in this hostel when you come to Berlin if you want a wonderful, personal and yes, very cozy hostel. The german word I would choose to describe the hostel is definently gemütlich and though i think cozy doesn't capture the real essence of the german word, it's the best word we have for it in the english language. (Homey, comfortable or even comforting, happy, and snuggly are other ways I can think of translating gemütlich, so you get the idea...) Okay, that's the end of my long and gushing review. Whew.

Some of the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, others not so much so my rating there represents an average. The beds were ok, but the room I was in was really close to the street and thus really loud and difficult to sleep in which wasn't at all helped by a member of staff speaking loudly on her mobile in front of my room at 7 am a few mornings. The security where I was staying was pretty much non-existant as the entry to the hostel was kept open and there are no locks on the individual rooms. On the good side, the other hostelers were fun and I made lots of new friends. The environment was nice and friendly and I would certainly consider going back, but would leave the laptop at home.

this hostel was nice, rooms were good, bath was a little dirty. There are nude photographs in the kitchen I found that unapporpiate. Otherwise ok place staff was not helpfull unless you were staying for an extended time. probably wouldn't stay here again because of photos & staff.

Of the two staff that I met, one was exceptionally informative and useful and the other somehwhat less so - pitty that I met the latter first.
