I found this place to be much better than the actual Khaosan Tokyo. It's much brighter, cleaner, doesn't smell, and there are many more rooms, the only problem is finding the place.

I've stayed at alot of hostels, and I'd have to say this was one of the best. It was brand spanking new (only opened since 1 November 2005), and the staff worked tirelessly to keep it spotless. Every day, the bathroom, kitchen and common areas were scrubbed and vacuumed. I also liked the fact that everyone had to remove their shoes in the hostel. While this is tradition to do so in any homestay establishment in Japan, it also meant the floors were extremely clean.
The staff were brilliant. They were helpful and extremely eager to make you feel welcome. There are few hostels where the staff would also be your friends by the end of your stay.
The hostel is not far from the train station. I didn't mind the short walk each day, and greatly appreciated that the neighbourhood it was in was ultra-safe and quiet. I would walk back to the hostel late at night and not feel threatened or scared.
Asakusa itself is not a hub of night-time action. That means you have to head out to areas such as Roppongi and Shinjuki for clubbing and serious pubbing. As the trains stop running at about midnight, you either have to leave your club/pub/restaurant by 11pm to make the last train, or pull an all-nighter until the trains start running early the next morning.
I was not fussed about either clubbing or pubbing. I found some great little hole-in-the-wall bars and restaurants frequented by locals that were tonnes of fun and interesting in Asakusa. Some of the most memorable experiences of my stay in Tokyo took place in such establishments.
Overall, this was an excellent hostel. Travelling on my own, I found the communal area a great place to meet and greet other travellers. I would stay there again and would recommend it to anyone I know who is thinking of staying in Tokyo.
Khaosan Tokyo Asakusa Annex staff - you guys were the best! Thanks for making Tokyo such a wonderful place to visit!
