I stayed in two different rooms at Square Caulaincourt, room 16 and room 35. Room 16 had a great view of the city, but the bathrooms were in need of a good scrub down. I don't think they were cleaned once in the first four nights I stayed there. I think it would've helped a lot had the management just left a sponge and a bottle of cleaner for guests to clean themselves as necessary-- it was one of the dorm rooms I stayed in, and I would have no problem giving a place a quick going over if it made me feel better about where I was staying. The other room I stayed in, room 35 had been renovated and was lovely and sparlklingly new and clean. It just goes to show you that one hostel (or budget hotel) can have many faces depending on where you stay. If they're planning on renovating all the rooms the place is going to be even better. As for the staff, the man who signed me in the first time was jovial and happy, and let me pay with traveller's cheques. The second guy tried to tell me they didn't take traveller's cheques, but since that was all I had by that point he took it. (As an aside, I had a really hard time finding places that took traveller's cheques. I would recommend having at least three days cash on you, and then going to a bank machine when necessary. Foreign banks will only cash your travellers cheques if you're a client-- which I wasn't. I had to cash them at a money exchange at 6.5%, after getting dinged at home by my own bank to change them into euro travellers cheques in the first place.) On the whole, Caulaincourt was a great choice. It was quiet and the people in my rooms were very friendly. The beds were okay. Apart from the scuzzy bathroom in room 16, the only other issue is that the coffee they serve in the moring is quite weak. You should go to the Bar Cepage next to it and fork over the 1.40 euros for a lovely espresso. Also, Montmartre is a beautiful district. I recommend Square Caulaincourt.

This was a bit hard to find and the rooms were very small. The put 3 bunkbeds when they should have out only 2, and the bathrooms were tiny. The breakfast was pretty good for a hostel, croissants, coffee, cereal, juice and stuff. There was free internet in the lobby, but the WiFi only worked sometimes. Not the same in the rest of Paris which is great for WiFi. The location was great, right in the heart of Monmarte, close to everything including Moulin Rouge, the 80 bus, & the Lemarck-Caulaincourt metro. Finally, Reggie, the American front desk guy, was really cool!

I enjoyed my stay while at the Hostel, it was my first time in Paris and my first time in a Hostel and I meet some nice people, the beds were comfortable, and it was a great experience. I did get locked out one night because of the curfew which made me upset but other than that all was well.

Decent hostel in a good location of Montmartre. Seemed safe and staff was fairly nice. Nothing special, but not bad.

I may not have given this hostel great ratings, but for the price, it was perfect. You should note that it's at the faaaaar north end of Paris, but it was easy to find when we finally got there. The staff wasn't incredibly helpful, but the area was clean enough and had wireless internet. We didn't have any problems. There were sheets and blankets on the bed when we walked in (which was nice because it was midnight). The lockout didn't bother us at all because we were out touring the whole time. The other four girls in our room were really nice, and we felt safe even though there were no lockers. The bathroom was a bit dodgey, but it's in the room at least. I would probably stay there again if I wanted to save money. Otherwise, I might try to find a place closer to the center of Paris. It just depends what I would want to do. I do love the Montmartre area though.

A great place to stay once you sort out how quick it is to get to town via the metro. Staff were nice and rooms areabove average for a cheap hostel.
