we booked this hostel as it said it had a kitchen but it turns out they had rented it out. The location was great though

The ratings belie my experience. Part of my stay was at carnaval and so prices were inflated. Despite that there were long periods when there was no hot water. It appeared that it was turned on and off as they felt like it. There was certainly no discernable pattern. And the only wash basin was consistently blocked. It was something of a novelty that females had to pass through the male dormitory to access the only security lockers. And yes it was always noisy at night, but what can you expect if you choose to stay in the midst of a carnaval

They charged me an extra 3 Reiais for a shower the day I left. Granted, I left at 3:30, but that's not that late. Overall it was okay, but I wasn't there during a busy time and it was kinda boring since there was only one other guy in my room of 10 beds. Also, they spoke no English which was surprising to me considering most people don't speak Portuguese. Lastly, they didn't really have a traveller friendly map of Salvador...in fact any map at all was hard to find in all of Pelourinho, even at the Tourist Information Office.

Very very simple, the lockers practically fall apart just by looking at them, it's preferable not to take a closer look at showers and sheets and two times (in the same night) I had to ring and knock on the door for more than half an hour for someone to open me. Good thing is that it's very centric although the area is not the safest one.
