sakiko and troy were great hosts and we felt more like we were staying with friends than at a hostel..they were very generous and helpful and fun!loads of beautiful places around hakuba..if you want a sterile, pristine hostel, dont go here, but if you want to relax in a lovely old wooden building with nice people and a friendly atmosphere, this is your place!

Hakuba is a beautiful small city about 40 miles west of Nagano; I went mountain biking through the area and got an opportunity to see rural Japanese life (I was there in mid-November, an off-season). Also be sure to have some Soba noodles (they come from that region) and go to one of the onsens. There is a 1 1/4 hour bus to Nagano, from which you can connect to other cities in the region (I recommend Obuse, 30 minutes north of Nagano on the Nagaden train line with lots of small museums on woodblock prints and Japanese lamps).

My stay in the Hakuba Alps Backpackers was one of the best ive had to date. The owners are extremly welcoming and helpful. The hostel itself has everything you will need for a good stay, and is within walking distance of all the attractions within the town.
