Having spent a week here, I got to know the Generator pretty well and my impressions are decidedly mixed. On the upside, the hostel is 50 yards from the S-Bahn station, which is convenient, the facilities seemed relatively new and the lobby, bar and cafeteria area are a happening scene. The breakfast buffet also has a ton of food, so you can stuff your face and not be hungry until dinner time.
On the downside, my room was filthy, with spilled beer and coffee on the floor that never got cleaned, despite my talking to the front desk. The staff were less-than-friendly--the two times I asked for the fastest way to get to two landmarks during a city-wide transit strike, the receptionists simply shrugged. In terms of location, while it IS near a train station, I walked by many more conviently-located hostels in Mitte and Friedreshain. Nothing's within walking distance. And, finally, while hostels cater to a younger audience, the average age when I visited could not have been more than 17. If you're over 23, you'll feel elderly here!
In short, if you're coming to Berlin you can do better than this place.

The hostel staff was really great. Really nice and completely open to any questions you had. I felt like it was a little far from the city center, but it was an easy SBahn ride or an hour walk. Also, it seemed to attract the young (16 to 22) party crowd. Wasn't really a backpacker type of hostel. But overall it was a good experience.
