I had a wonderful time at this hostel. The staff are unique in a good way. The location is great and easy to access. The security is good because there is always a staff person 24/7. Quiet hours start at midnight, so you can have a good conversation and then go to bed. There is no curfew. The only bad thing is the cleanliness. The showers have mold, there are no paper towels or napkins, the fridge is just plain gross (inside and outside) and the rooms look like they could use a good cleaning of the floors and all horizontal surfaces. Don't get me wrong-it is a good hostel...just needs better up-keep.

I really liked this place (apart from a snorer in my dorm - but these are risks that have little to do with the administration - bring cotton plugs always with you!), which was very clean, decent, perfectly located and well set up for all basic stay-in-New-York needs (excellent price, breakfast, internet access, sweet-smelling linen, spotless bathrooms, general sense of comfort from 24-hour reception person in the center of the shared floor, etc). Also the immediate email contact with the reception once you enroll is most reassuring. I went to New York for a cultural week-end, and was very grateful for this means to stay decently on my own without imposing myself on longlost friends.
I highly recommend this hostel to any traveler. It is within 15-20 min of times square by subway and right within walking distance is ChinaTown and LittleItaly. Hostels are just a place to crash and take in a free breakfast maybe so given this it is excellent. I am an American graduate student that was there for a professional conference and for $35 a night I saved a lot of money on hotel costs. Everybody I met there was very friendly and conscientous. The only drawback I saw, and mind you this is small, the shower and bunk areas should have adhesive hooks at least for organization. Otherwise heck of a good place to stay!
