This hostel doesn't accept credit cards and the full payment is due before they'll give you the keys. This information wasn't online, so I didn't find out until after I got there. The website says that there are security lockers in the rooms, but there weren't any in the room I stayed in, just 24-hour rentals in the basement. The lock on my door was a bit sticky, so the best way to get it to latch was to slam the door. The bathrooms were quite dumpy, so I made a habit of using bathrooms when I was out and about during the day. All that said, it was exactly what I was looking for - a cheap hostel in a convenient area of the Upper West Side.

This hostel messed up our reservation so we had to find a different place to stay in the middle of the night (which wasn't easy and very expensive). While it was their mistake they weren't very helpful and even shouted at us. There even were mouse traps in the corridors! The same night we met 2 girls that also stayed at teh Columbus. One night they find two guys in their room that were let in by the "management" of the Columbus. Don't go there! (we also stayed in the Columbus last year and had a great time. The hostel deteriorated over the year)

If you don't want to sleep, go to Columbus Studio ! Slamed doors, people talking and singing in the middle of the night, "please put the toilet paper in the trash bin and not in the toilet" (sic !), etc.

Got locked in our room for 30 minutes before help arrived. Staff didn't seem to phased.
