Definitely clean, safe and friendly, and right next to the red light district, but the 2am curfew was a bit annoying, and don't expect to party there - strictly no drugs or alcohol inside, and the giant "jesus loves you" sign painted over the hallway was a little unsettling. I decided to move to the flying pig after one night when i found an opening there, but I would definitely recommend shelter city, depending on you're intentions in Amsterdam, of course.

not fot "amsterdam goes wild!" seekers, but no doubts very good for quiet tourists who would like to get to know the city

The only thing disappointing about this hostel is that there was a 2am curfew. We had confused this one with the Shelter City Jordaan, which does not have a curfew. This hostel isn't really for people who want to party the whole time they are there, but it was very good if you wanted to do classic tourist things during the day (getting up early) and exploring the night life too. The hostel is blatantly Christian and has many American ministry workers. We had no problem with people pressing religion upon us, although when we asked where a Catholic church was, they suggested, "Maybe you would like to try a different church for a change" as if we should not believe in what we do. That was a little irking, but other than that we enjoyed this hostel a lot.
