We've read other reviews that complained about lack of cleanliness of bathrooms. Our observation was that this was the fault of the clientele rather than of the staff. The situation could be helped by more frequent cleaning by the staff, however.

The Y was a perfect place to sleep while exploring the big city. It was clean, surprisingly quiet and extremely affordable! They also let you use all the YMCA amenities while staying there, like the gym and the pool. I would definitely stay again!
The room a bit smellee. Best location in town and the free gym + pool ++ rocks!! Not like a hostel where everybody hangs out, just sleep and get out.... Recommended!!!

The West Side YMCA is located in close proximity to central park, the American Museum of Natural History and numerous metro stops. This makes it an ideal location to explore Manhattan at a (relatively) low price. Although for the price the crowded quarters are to be anticipated, the convenience is only truly offset by poorly maintained restrooms where clumps of toilet paper are often found on the wet restroom floor and the scent of dried urine frequently enters the corridors. If you're looking for a cheap, conveniently located hostel, this is the one for you. If you want amenities and cleanliness, stay clear!
