it's a bit far from the historical centre, like 20-30 minutes walking. and the silence after midnight policy is not so strict. There're some guys partying in the living room until at least 1am when I stayed there. Amazing place to stay, the staff were great and its pretty close to everything you need. Make sure you take day trips to Cascais and Sintra, they are a must see!! The hostel was really fun and have a great atmosphere to it, we ended up staying at the B&W hostel in Porto right after too! Amanda, from Canada ~ 12th Jun 2009

I actually stayed in Kitsch Hostel, located at Restauradores (much closer to the city) since Black & White had overbooked me. The staff was really nice, always willing to answer my questions. :-) Wireless connection at that time was unstable but they recognised the issue. Only downside is that they didn't have soap in the toilets, so you'll have to bring one with you everytime you need to do your daily duty, and that there were mosquitoes in my room.
