I checked into my room. The room had a stale smell to it. Not as clean as I thought. The help desk was nice enough. There's a $5 deposit for linen and $10 for keys. I found bed bugs in the pillow case when I was making my bunkbed and decided not to stay so checked out of Koala (received full refund which I appreciate). I realize it's a humid environment at Cairns and bedbug might be an issue here, but I felt overall cleanliness was poor. I'm being objective and just wanted to provide a fa Sung, from USA ~ 10th Aug 2009

The Koala Beach Resort was fine, needs a coat of paint and there are so many hostels right on the Esplanade which would make it hard to compete. Judith, from Australia ~ 13th Aug 2009

The kitchen contains nothing. You have to put a deposit down to hire out cutlery/plates/utensils, and then the kitchen contains no sharp knives or chopping boards. Only one tap works, and there is no washing up liquid or sponges to wash up with. The room was cleaned, but wasn't cleaned very well, and was generally dirty. Daniella, from England ~ 28th Jul 2009

The room was absolutely beautiful! The bathroom/shower was very clean. I stayed in a four bed mixed dorm and it honestly could've almost been a hotel room. The only bad thing about this place is that the kitchen has almost nothing to offer and it's constantly dirty. There are a couple of microwaves, a stove and a fridge. Really great/friendly staff, they were always there to try and make your stay as comforting as possible, they definately made my stay worthwhile! I stayed in a 4 bed room, the bathroom was clean and apealing, unlike other hostels where you want to wear your sandals in. Airconditioned(thank god). Just a block away from the bus stop and only minutes away from all the bars/clubs. Highly recomend this hostel to all backpackers! ~Dakota from Canada Dakota, from Canada ~ 15th Dec 2008
