This hostel has a great open shared space with huge TV, balcony tables, hammocks and sofas. It has a great atmosphere and the two receptionists (1 girl 1 guy) are really friendly & helpful. Perfect location-in the beautiful old part of town,lovely atmosphere (while the Getsemani area where many other hostals are is drity and not inviting at all). Grocery store just around the corner. Facilities ok-kitchen easily crowded but ok equipped. Lovely balcony! In main area large TV which is running all day loudly - which is quite irritating as can be heard everywhere.Staff not overly helpful but ok.Would stay there again, comfy beds.Often people sleeping on floor in main area Julia, from Germany ~ 1st Mar 2012

I realised very quickly that the compulsory cool showers were a great idea in cartagena. As the name says, its a chillout hostel so its not one for going crazy in unless you find people who want to head out to party. I had no smartphone to use anymore so the line-up for the computer was quite annoying sometimes. But the balcony is really pretty and only a short walk to the local square. The location was perfect, within the Walls of Cartagena.The atmosphere was great, met lots of good people who I decided to travel with. In the evenings the staff puts on music to liven up the mood even more. Two cons I have - I didnt trust the male staff, thought they were shady.And There are only 3 bathrooms.The bathrooms got really dirty and seemed to be cleaned only once a day. Makako is awesome. Yina and Gabriel are super fun and helpful (and I'm sure yina's got the best laugh in Colombia!) The cleaning staff are really sweet too and will make your bed daily. A sweet spot! I enjoyed staying at Makako, the staff of the hostel was really very nice to us. There is not much fun at the hostel but it is a place to feel at home, watch TV, movies and meet new friends. Security was not very good as by the time I was in the hostel, a backpack of one of the girls dissapeared. Nevertheless, the staff tried to improve security by leaving to door locked after that.
