Emma is not only a bunkhouse but also an idea. It was created on the initiative of friends who have been involved in various liberation and egalitarian organizations or movements.
By creating this place we wanted to show it is easy to put one's ideals into practice. The name of the hostel comes from the name of Emma Goldman, a socio-political, anarcha-feminist activist who lived in the turn of 19 and 20 centuries.
We are eco-friendly and segregate rubbish. Many recipes for energy efficiency (eg. energy saving light bulbs, light sensors) and water conservation (eg. water consumption meters) have been already installed at Emma. What is more, 20% of the energy used at the hostel comes from renewable sources of energy. All the furnishings are wooden, made partly from secondhand wood. They have been created by Reinold Goerigk from our friendly farm in Węgajty. He built beds using boards and cuttings, as well as ulitized old floorboards to make new doors. The wood is impregnated with natural protective agents such as cottonseed oil or linseed oil. We are doing our best to make sure sanitary products and detergents are biodegradable, not animal tested and not produces by large corporations, and stationery we use comes from recycling. We would like to use as many secondhand items as possible, thus things one does not need will find their new purposes and come handy at our place.
