This was my first stay in a hostel out of Australia and I was greeted with a warm welcome!my room was clean and tidy and the location is very convenient to many many shops. The staff are lovely and make you feel at ease. Apparently there is a common room renovation happening which will be wonderful to increase the abilty to meet other travellers. I would reccommend this hostel to anyone :)

Centipedes could swim.
This was what I learnt as soon as I tried to use the basin in my 3 x 4 m small room. Mind you, this miniscule 12 metre sq of space was meant for 2 person, with a bed and an attached bathroom and toilet all in! You can imagine for yourself how pathetically small this room was! Next, the bed. The mattress was almost flat and I could feel the wooden board. Sympathies to the next few people who are gonna sleep on this crumpling bed. Itâ€s moist to the touch, and not because itâ€s a water bed, but more so due to the poor ventilation of the room. The ventilation was provided by means of a noisy poorly-maintained ceiling fan which squeaked terribly as it blew futilely to remove the stale stench lingering in the room.
Bathing facilities were equally appalling. Yes, hot water was provided. But if the water runs off from the shower head even before reaching you due to an existing leakage in the shower tube connection, having hot water was not much of a comfort. When a request was made to the receptionist, she agreed to have it fixed. This was somewhat an initial comfort to an otherwise shocking hostel dismay. All that kindness soon came to nought when an uncouth, fair-skinned plump uncle came to fix the problem. Not only did he thumped rudely on my door, he was not well-equipped to fix the problem. Thinking that he might need some assistance, I stood by the toilet/shower door, only to get an occasional unwelcome stare from him. Put off by his attitude, I left him alone. When the problem was purportedly fixed, I was relieved..only to find that the problem had then been aggravated by replacing the previous shower head with a broken one. The tube continued to leak and I had to leave with it for my 7-day stay! Boy, was I glad that I did not flood the whole of Lee Hostel during my stay.
On my first night, much to my disgust, I had a scaly 4-legged gecko in my room! Hey, I booked a room for 1 person. Should not I get a refund/discount off the room rate that I paid for, especially since it was being shared by 1 gecko, 1 centipede, and small cockroaches?
Not just that, sewerage flies were able to make their way to my room, and I reckon that this was due to the old run-down state of the building. Itâ€s poorly maintained, and seems all ready to be demolished. Donâ€t believe a single thing youâ€ve managed to google about the history of Chungking mansion! If anything, you should be googling for an image of the filthy building. While I had 2 windows in my room, I did not dare to open them for fear of more filth, flies and what-not coming into my room. Also, this building was inhabited by blacks and suspicious-looking characters who kept preying on tourists. I didnâ€t feel safe. Not at all.
The doors of my room opened out to a perennially-dripping-wet space, which to my surprise, was used by someone to air their blankets and bedsheets! I am not saying that itâ€s the hostel owner whoâ€s doing it just so that I will not make it more revolting that it already is.
Now on the owners. They were made out to be such kind angels by â€those†who had posted their comments. I strongly condemned any acts of disrespect to hostels guests, including acts of impatience, unwilling to help, shouting, jumping hostel guests†queue etc. It could have been his bad day, but for me to witness/encounter on various occasions of the owner committing all of the above acts just seemed too much of a coincidence. Lesson learnt â€" treat all previous comments with caution. They may not have been posted by fellow travelers.
HongKong is a lovely city. At Lee Hostel, I paid half the price I otherwise would for a nice hotel stay, but ended up paying more than the full price for a marred, filthy experience!
For the record, I booked a room in Oriental Pearl Hostel, which amazingly transformed into Lee Hostel when I reached. The only thank-you I wanna say is to Hostelworld for giving me the chance to air/share my views and experience.
